Roland and I headed up pretty early on a perfect February day, but made the mistake of trying the norther approach to Kelso without snowshoes. We went farther and farther up-valley in Grizzly Gulch until we found ourselves at the base of the North Face. We attempted to climb that, but it was either loose scree or variable snow in a couloir, which didn't seem very safe. We retreated after we reached about 12,500 feet.
