Day 5 was spent lounging around the town of Mount Shasta: as a result of Chris's getting food poisoning, we delayed our climb of the mountain by a day. Despite Chris's feeling quite lousy, it was nice to spend some time in town. We did climb the mountain the next day, though Chris was still dragging rather hard. The snow was pretty decent, and we had just a bit of scree at the top of WFG before we hit the AG route at Misery Hill. The summit was in and out of clouds when we got there, but the weather was otherwise quite good. We ran into some trouble crossing the Red Banks and had to do some Class 4 scrambling to get down to the snow the way we went. After that we had a long clissade down to Lake Helen, and then slogged back to the trailhead. We left the next morning and headed back toward Susanvill, getting some more great views of Shasta on the way; and then we crossed Nevada on US 50, arriving at Great Basin National Park late in the evening.
