New York Lake: The backpacking trip from hell

Why, you ask, was this the backpacking trip from hell? Well, it started out as Chris and Meriah celebrating Meriah's birthday by going for a weekand trip. They invited Ben and Holly, and then me, and then it somehow became and EMCUB trip with eight people, most of whom were not accustomed to class 3 terrain. No problem - just a three-mile hike along a trail to a nice lake at treeline. But the trail stopped. We had to descend some class 3 gullies to get to the right valley (no, we were NOT off-route), and then bushwhack up to the Lake. We ended up putting up our tents in a hailstorm (at a different lake; shallow with no fish for Ben to extract), and trudging up to New York lake the next day - and getting caught in another hailstorm. It was the middle of the day at NY Lake, so Ben caught no fish there either. However, Meriah likes to tell the story of Chris and me jumping into New York Lake despite, or because of, the snowbanks at the waterline.
