Proposal Number:  0321325

Title:  University of Colorado High School Summer Program for Women

Program Solicitation:  NSF 03-502

Dear Dr. Hasenfratz,

A review panel of experts met recently at the National Science Foundation to evaluate preproposals submitted to the above referenced Program Solicitation.  I regret to inform you that your preproposal was not among those encouraged to submit a full proposal.

You may access the reviews of your preproposal and the panel summary at the URL referenced below.  They may be helpful to you in understanding the Foundation's action and also in preparing any future submissions.

If you would like further information concerning the merit evaluation of your preproposals, please contact the cognizant program officer whose name, email address, and telephone number are given below.

The program received 118 preliminary proposals submitted to the January 23rd deadline.   They were each reviewed by at least two peer reviewers.  About one third are being encouraged to submit a full proposal by April 11th.  We expect to be able to fund 7-10 full proposals in that competition (with a mix of large and small requests).  Given equal merit in the full proposal review, factors in addition to merit are considered, such as results (and completion) of prior GDSE grants, diversity of PI’s, diversity of grantee institutions, geography, and fit with our program objectives and our portfolio.   NSF by policy aims to include new performers and to reach areas and institutions that have not benefited from funding before.

Anyone receiving feedback from this preliminary review should consider the potential for funding from other NSF programs, as the focus on the participation of girls and women in STEM education is an appropriate topic in other education programs.  Many are listed in the GDSE program announcement, but in particular:

·        Information technology programs for students and teachers, see Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST, NSF 02-147)

·    Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Teacher Preparation (STEMTP, NSF 02-130)

 ·    Research on information technology and education or workforce, see Information Technology Workforce (ITWF, NSF 02-170)

·     Partnerships between universities and school districts to improve K-12 education  -- with a track called “targeted issues” (MSP, NSF 02-061)

·     Research on learning and education, and evaluation of education programs (ROLE, NSF 02-023 and NSF 02-34)

·     Engineering education (PD 01-1340)

Thank you for participating in this important competition.

Sincerely,

Donald E. Thompson
