World Fencing Championships

Swordsmen of the Rockies

By Richard Martin, 3-25-05

Most people know that Boulder is a world center for sports like running, triathlon and rock climbing. Few people know that it’s a hotbed of fencing, too. This weekend at the world fencing championships in Linz, Austria, two Boulder teenagers will make swordplay history: Andras Horanyi, 18, goes into the competition ranked No. 3 in the world in junior men’s foil, having only recently slipped from the top of the rankings. His teammate Nick Chinman, a junior at Boulder High, is the first person ever to fence for the U.S. in six different events at the world championships. On day one of the competition he took a silver medal in the under-17 men’s foil. Both Horanyi and Chinman train at Northern Colorado Fencers, a Boulder club that has produced numerous national champions over the last 15 years.
